One of five men charged in the beating death of a Marine reservist in Old Town Pasadena was convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter and assault.
Fernando Sabino Ramirez, 26, also known as “Gumby,” is set to be sentenced Dec. 1 for his lead role in the Aug. 5, 2013, attack on Joshua Martinez, a 25-year-old Marine reservist at Camp Pendleton.
Ramirez faces up to nine years in prison, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
When attacked by Ramirez, Martinez fell and hit his head on the pavement. The reservist was taken to a hospital and declared dead the next day.
Timothy Scott Coley, 24, and 26-year-old Jonathan Pierre Aquino each pleaded no contest July 16 to a single count of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and were sentenced to three years probation and 60 days community service.
Sentencing is scheduled Wednesday for Jonas Cardenas Ramos, 25, and Angel Christopher Moroyoqui, 22, who also pleaded no contest to one felony count each of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury.
