A North Hollywood man was ordered Friday to stand trial for the bludgeoning deaths of his parents just over two years ago.
Jonathan Mercado, 27, is charged with two counts of murder for the Sept. 7, 2012, killings of his father, Alexandro, and mother, Veronica.
The murder charges include the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders.
Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek the death penalty against Mercado, who is due back in a Van Nuys courtroom Nov. 21.
Authorities said Mercado’s parents were beaten to death at the family’s home in the 8100 block of Radford Street, where he lived with his parents and two younger siblings.
His father’s body was found wrapped in a sheet in a bedroom in the home, while his mother’s body was wrapped in a sheet and left in a pickup truck that was abandoned in Sun Valley.
Mercado was arrested Sept. 8, 2012, by Los Angeles police and has remained jailed without bail.
