Two shallow offshore earthquakes — one of them packing the punch needed to trigger a moderate level of damage — shook the Channel Islands region Monday according to computer-generated reports from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The first temblor struck at 00:40 a.m. at a depth of around 3 miles, its epicenter 37 miles south-southwest of Avalon and 63 miles south-southwest of San Pedro, the USGS reported.

The second shaker hit two minutes later, at a depth of nearly 7 miles, its epicenter 42 miles south-southwest of Avalon and 68 miles south-southwest of San Pedro.

Additionally, a small shaker — with a 2.5 magnitude — struck at 12:08 a.m. around the Orange County community of Fountain Valley.

There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries.
