A man was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday morning after he was shot in the head as he sat on a sidewalk near downtown Los Angeles, police said.

The shooting occurred around 1:45 a.m. on Towne Avenue between 4th and 5th streets, said Sgt. Ed Kinney of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Station.

“A guy was sitting on a curb,” Kinney said. He was approached by three males between the ages of 15 and 18.”They shot him in the head.” They then fled the scene.

Officers at first thought the victim suffered a blunt force trauma to the head because there was minimal blood loss and he was conscious and talking to them and paramedics, the sergeant said. The victim even walked to the ambulance.

After transport to a hospital, doctors performed a CT scan on the man and found a bullet lodged in his brain, Kinney said.

“His condition rapidly worsened and now he’s in critical condition,” he said.

The victim is believed to be a transient, Kinney said. The motive for the shooting was not immediately determined, he said.
