An Anaheim man was convicted Friday of his 19-month-old son’s beating death.
Jurors deliberated less than two days before finding Jesus Vega Estrada, 44, guilty of second-degree murder and assault on a child causing death, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
He is facing a maximum of 25 years to life in state prison, with sentencing scheduled Dec. 15 in a Pomona courtroom.
During a visit with the boy in Valinda, Estrada told the boy’s mother that he was going to take the toddler to buy some juice and candy at about 11:15 p.m. last Nov. 27, according to Deputy District Attorney Michael Matoba.
The boy was vomiting when the two returned home about 15 minutes later, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
The boy’s parents took the child to a hospital, where he died early the next morning, according to the prosecutor.
During Estrada’s trial, coroner’s officials testified that the boy died from blunt force trauma to the liver and had trauma to his head, broken ribs and bruises on the body, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
The prosecutor also argued during the trial that there were uncharged acts of abuse on Oct. 17 and 20 — dates when Estrada had visitation with the boy.
Estrada was arrested Nov. 28 by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and has remained in jail since then.
