The sister of a man gunned down after he repossessed a car pleaded today for public help in finding the two men wanted for the killing.
“What these gentlemen, these young men have taken from us is indescribable,” said Mona Lawson, sister of tow truck driver Steve Lawson. ‘Our pain is forever and what we want is justice.”
Sheriff’s detectives said the suspects — Davion Harrison and Derell “DJ” Clark — watched as Steve Lawson legally repossessed a vehicle from the 14500 block of South Butler Avenue in Compton about 3:50 a.m. July 27.
Harrison and Clark chased Lawson to the parking lot of a nearby 7-Eleven store where Harrison got out and fired a shot at Lawson, detectives said. Lawson fled from the parking lot with Harrison and Clark chasing him, detectives said.
The chase ended in South Gate, where the victim was killed as he got out of his tow truck, authorities said. Harrison is seen on surveillance video shooting at Lawson, authorities said.
Detectives said the tow truck driver had taken the car, unaware that the female owner was asleep in the rear seat. The suspects apparently were angry that her car had been taken, detectives said.
The city of South Gate has offered a $5,000 reward in the case.
