A suspect who allegedly dropped his wallet as he stole a woman’s purse was arrested Thursday in connection with that robbery and an unrelated crime in Canyon Country, a sheriff’s deputy said.

Detectives located and arrested 35-year-old Ismael Soto about 3:45 p.m., Deputy Josh Dubin of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s Santa Clarita Valley Station.

The theft happened Nov. 1 in the 19200 block of Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country, where the 35-year-old victim was loading groceries into her car when her purse was snatched, Dubin said.

Soto allegedly was running away after stealing the purse when the victim and a witness “observed a wallet containing the suspect’s ID fall from (his) pants pocket,” Dubin said.

Detectives circulated a photo of Soto and said he was a possible suspect in an unrelated crime involving criminal threats and a battery in Canyon Country in September.

Soto was being booked on suspicion of robbery this afternoon at the Santa Clarita Valley Station and was due in court on Monday, Dubin said. He is suspected in the other crime, details of which were not immediately available because they involve a “tricky, active investigation,” the deputy said.
