A man in an Albert Einstein mask turned out to be no criminal genius as police arrested him Friday on suspicion of stealing two guitars from a Montebello store.
The suspect, later identified as 33-year-old local man Ruben Antelo, was seen about 7 a.m., a guitar in each hand, running south on Maple Avenue from a strip mall in the 1400 block of West Beverly Boulevard, according to Montebello police.
“Although that (was) suspicious in itself, the subject was also wearing an Albert Einstein Halloween mask over his face,” according to a police statement.

The suspect was followed as he got into a vehicle and drove away, only to be stopped by officers who detained him for further investigation, police said.
“Officers later discovered that the front window to the Natural Herb and Tea store located at 1435 W. Beverly Blvd. had been smashed and two electric guitars that were on display at the location had been taken,” police said.
Antelo was booked at the Montebello police station on suspicion of commercial burglary, police said.
He was being held in lieu of $20,000 bail with a court date scheduled for Tuesday in downtown Los Angeles, according to sheriff’s online booking records.
Anyone with information about similar thefts was urged to contact the Montebello police detective handling the investigation at (323) 887-1200, extension 247.
