A 12-inch water main break closed Benedict Canyon Drive Tuesday, and the road was expected to remain closed through the afternoon commute.
Water started gushing to the surface just south of Mulholland Drive in the 3200 block of Benedict Canyon about 7:20 a.m., and motorists were advised to use Beverly Glen or Coldwater Canyon.
Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews shut off the flow, excavated the broken cast-iron pipe and were working to replace the broken section, Kim Hughes of the DWP said.
No customers lost service in the area, and no homes were flooded, she said.
Initially, repairs were project to take about seven hours, but Hughes said the road likely would be closed through the afternoon commute.
