The California Highway Patrol on Wednesday night will begin a “maximum enforcement period,” during which all available officers will be deployed to look for motorists driving while impaired or otherwise breaking traffic laws over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
The enforcement effort begins at 6 p.m. and continues through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, according to CHP Officer Edgar Figueroa.
“The extended Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest travel periods of the year,” Figueroa said.
“As families and friends gather for the holiday, (we) want to encourage travelers to always buckle up, avoid driving distracted, obey the posted speed limit, and never drink and drive,” Figueroa said.
“The law is explicit: driving with a blood-alcohol content of .08 percent or more is illegal,” Figueroa said. “But even with a lower blood- alcohol content, a driver may be a hazard and (may be) taken to jail.”
