One person was killed, and sheriff’s Search and Rescue teams combed a steep canyon in driving rain to look for possible additional victims of a two-vehicle crash on Kanan-Dume Road in Malibu this afternoon.

Two vehicles sideswiped each other above a canyon, between Cavalieri Road and the city limits, at 3:54 p.m., a sheriff’s deputy said.

One vehicle sustained massive damage, and passengers may have fallen into a steep canyon next to the road, according to authorities.

Deputies and the California Highway Patrol closed Kanan-Dume Road at Pacific Coast Highway to the south, and Latigo Canyon Road to the north. Traffic was diverted into twisting canyon roads.

Kanan-Dume Road was expected to be closed until about midnight, deputies said.

The closures further isolated Malibu, as PCH was closed at either end of town and the three other major access roads had minor rockslides.
