Traffic on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Glendale was blocked in both directions early Wednesday following crashes involving big rigs and other vehicles, the California Highway Patrol reported

The northbound lanes of the freeway were closed after a big rig struck the center divider near the transition road to the Ventura (134) Freeway, spilling its load of cement across all lanes around 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos.

Crews worked for several hours to clear debris and engine oil from the roadway. The No. 3 lane was reopened at 4:19 a.m., and the remaining lanes were reopened at 4:58 a.m., the CHP reported.

The impact of the accident sent debris into the southbound lanes, where separate collisions occurred around 11:45 p.m., blocking the No. 1, 2, and 3 lanes for a time, Villalobos said.
