Three people were killed Monday morning in a collision between a big rig and a sedan on the Golden State (5) Freeway south of the Upper Crossover near Castaic Lake, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The accident was reported on the southbound Golden State Freeway south of the Upper Crossover around 1 a.m., said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos. The sedan crashed into the back of the big rig and wound up underneath it, he said.

The crash occurred in a brake-check area, so freeway traffic was not affected, Villalobos said.

The victims included an adult, a child, and a third person about whom no details were immediately available, he said.
