A 54-year-old man accused of trying to bludgeon another man to death with a rock in Griffith Park was ordered Monday to stand trial.
Tyrone Isumu allegedly struck Jose Ramon Garcia multiple times with a rock and then hit him with a large steel trash can.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Abzug ruled that there was sufficient evidence to proceed to trial on a charge of attempted murder with an allegation of great bodily injury.
Garcia was comatose following the attack and suffered paralysis, according to prosecutors.
Police said the victim and suspect were both known to frequent a homeless encampment in the area and became involved in a dispute that led to the attack. Prosecutors said, however, that Isumu has an address in Encino.
Isumu, who has remained jailed in lieu of $530,000 bail since his Nov. 3 arrest, is due back in court for arraignment Jan. 5.
If convicted, he faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
