A car theft suspect who led law enforcement officers on a freeway chase in a smoking car was arrested Tuesday after abandoning the vehicle and running.
The name of the suspect, who had been driving silver BMW, was not immediately available pending booking.
The chase came to halt on the northbound Long Beach (710) Freeway, where the driver pulled over, got out of the car and made an sudden motion with his hands before getting back inside.
After a few more moments, while California Highway Patrol officers trained their pistols on him, he got out and ran along the freeway shoulder near the interchange with the Golden State (5) Freeway.
CHP officers ran after him, caught him on Ramona Avenue and shocked him with a Taser to take him into custoday, CHP Officer Miguel Luevano said. He said sheriff’s deputies asked the CHP to take over the chase in Commerce at 3:53 p.m. No shots were fired, Luevano said.
It was not immediately clear where the 2002 model BMW was reported stolen.
