Two motorists were killed Thursday in a head-on traffic crash in unincorporated Whittier.

The motorists were identified as Matthew George Tapia, 24, of Santa Ana, and Corina Villareal, 54, of Azusa, said Coroner’s Lt. David Smith.

Tapia was driving a red 1999 Isuzu Trooper south on First Avenue, approaching Candlelight Drive at an unknown speed when he apparently allowed the vehicle to drift to his left, across the double yellow lines.

It struck Villareal’s northbound black 2007 Lexus IS250, according a crash report from the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP was notified of the crash at 1:30 a.m., where both vehicles collided head on just north of Candlelight Drive. Both motorists died at the scene, according to the agency.

“Causative factors of this collision are under investigation,” according to the statement.
