A fire broke out in the kitchen of a third-story unit of a four-story apartment building in downtown Long Beach Friday, authorities said.

One person whose status was described as mild was evaluated and treated at the scene of the fire, which was reported at 2:41 p.m. at 921 E. Broadway, according to Long Beach Firefighter/Paramedic Jake Heflin.

A woman was displaced from the apartment where the fire broke out and was being assisted by the Red Cross in finding temporary shelter, Heflin said, adding that utility service to the unit was cut off.

The first of about 20 firefighters that responded encountered heavy smoke coming from the building, but the flames were doused by 2:54 p.m., Heflin said.

A second-floor apartment beneath the unit of origin sustained water damage, he said
