A Lakewood man who confronted a friend about alleged “inappropriate behavior” with the man’s 20-year-old stepdaughter fatally struck the friend with a wooden stool Monday when the victim began choking the woman, sheriff’s officials said.

The man was not arrested, with sheriff’s officials saying they were still investigating the circumstances of the fatal confrontation.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, the victim was visiting friends around 12:45 a.m. at a home in the 4500 block of Adenmoor Avenue, when the homeowner confronted the man about his actions with the homeowner’s stepdaughter a few days earlier. Upset about being confronted, the man burst into the woman’s room and began choking her, Deputy Amber Smith said.

Family members tried to pull the man away from the woman, but were unsuccessful, Smith said. The homeowner then struck the man twice in the head with a wooden stool, and the man staggered outside the home and collapsed, she said.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Smith said no arrests had been made “because all the details haven’t been figured out yet and it wasn’t clear what the alleged relationship between the dead man and the stepdaughter had been.”

“Ultimately the victim is somewhat a suspect too,” she said.

The names of the dead man and the homeowner were not released.

Anyone with information was asked to call the sheriff department’s homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500.
