A man who was shot by a Los Angeles police officer in Arleta underwent surgery Friday, authorities said.
The shooting occurred about 10:30 p.m. Thursday in the 13200 block of Reedley Street, where officers had gone in response to a report of a man with a knife who was possibly suicidal, LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman said.
The wounded man, whose name was not immediately released, was in surgery about seven hours after the shooting, added LAPD Officer Jane Kim.
Police said the shooting followed a 911 call from a relative of the man. An officer entered the residence from which the call was initially made, encountered the man in a front room, and the shooting occurred, police said. No officers were injured.
A large kitchen knife was recovered at the shooting scene, Kim said.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Katherine Main said firefighters went to the residence at 10:26 p.m. Thursday in response to a call about a possibly psychologically disturbed patient.
