A man suffered an electrical shock Friday while trying to steal copper wire in Panorama City and was hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

The man was trying to remove the wire from a transformer attached to Kaiser Hospital at 13652 Cantara Street around 12:15 a.m., said Los Angeles Police Lt. Paul McLaughlin, adding that the shock left the victim severely burned.

“He’s being treated, but there seems to be a very low chance of survival,” McLaughlin said early Friday morning.

McLaughlin said the man appeared to be between 40 and 50.
