A crane operator working 100 feet above the ground at a container terminal in Wilmington was rescued by firefighters early Wednesday after falling ill.

The operator was lowered to the ground in a litter basket attached to a 100-foot aerial ladder by Los Angeles Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue Team members, LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

The incident was reported at a container terminal at the Port of Los Angeles on East Harry Bridges Boulevard, Humphrey said. He said the operator had reported falling ill and was get off the crane under his own power.

Thirty five firefighters were on scene for the rescue, which lasted around 70 minutes. An LAFD dispatcher said the unidentified victim was lowered safely and transported to a hospital.
