A minivan sheared a power pole in Montebello Thursday, knocking down an electrical transformer and live wires that trapped a man in the vehicle.
It was not immediately clear if the man, who was freed after about an hour, or anyone else was injured in the crash just after 7 p.m. in the area of Beverly Boulevard and Poplar Avenue, according to Montebello police.
Michael Padian of Southern California Edison said 2,959 of the utility’s customers were without power. He had no estimate of how long it would take to restore service.
Police said traffic signals were also not functioning.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area and residents were advised to stay in their homes while the crew did its work.
