A stolen vehicle suspect who was believed to be armed surrendered without incident in Pico Rivera after a SWAT team closed in on him following a 3 1/2-hour search, according to authorities.
The SWAT team was dispatched to Rosemead Boulevard and Telegraph Road at around 4:30 p.m., according to Lt. Alex Villanueva of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department‘s Pico Rivera Station.
“He was observed fleeing in a vehicle believed stolen with a stolen license plate with a gun in his hand,” Villanueva told City News Service. The suspect was located on the rooftop of a home. “He was attempting to conceal himself but was visible from a helicopter. He surrendered when deputies got ladders, got on the rooftop and convinced him to come down peacefully. He was minus the gun. He had ditched the gun.”
The incident ended at about 8 p.m.
The suspect was identified as 24-year-old Art Valenzuela Jr. of Pico Rivera, the lieutenant said. “He was on probation. He was arrested for taking a vehicle without the owners consent, joyriding, and possession of a firearm.”
