A 48-year-old man described as a transient suffered head trauma and a broken back Sunday when he crashed a bicycle, possibly while racing, on a trail in Azusa, police said.
The crash happened about 11:30 a.m. on a bike trail in the 1900 block of N. San Gabriel Canyon Road, according to Azusa Police.
“A preliminary investigation revealed the male was riding a bicycle, and was possibly racing another cyclist,” according to a police statement. “The male’s bicycle had a mechanical failure, which caused him to be ejected off the bike.”
The rider was not wearing a helmet and suffered major head trauma and a broken back when he struck the pavement, police said.
The man was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to County- USC Medical Center.
“It is unknown at this stage of the investigation if alcohol and/or drugs were a contributing factor,” police said.
