A 20-year-old man was ordered Tuesday to be jailed on $1 million bail in connection with charges stemming from a crash in Palmdale last month that left his passenger dead.
Douglas Vernon Fiddament of Pearblossom is accused of crashing a stolen 1997 Dodge Ram pickup truck with an RV trailer attached into a school bus that didn’t have any children on board, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Manuel Lopez, a 33-year-old passenger in the truck, was killed in the Jan. 13 collision. The bus driver was uninjured.
Fiddament is scheduled to be arraigned March 4 in Lancaster on one count each of murder, receiving stolen property and possession for sale of methamphetamine, along with three counts of driving or taking a vehicle without consent — two of which involve the pickup truck and the trailer and the other involving a Jeep Wrangler that was taken a few weeks earlier.
The criminal complaint also includes allegations that he was convicted in September 2013 of taking a vehicle without consent and was free on bail at the time of the crash.
Fiddament could face up to 21 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
