A Pomona man was sentenced Thursday to 13 years in state prison for plowing his car into the back of a tractor in a construction area on the westbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway while under the influence, killing one of his passengers.
Jacob Garcia Jr., 51, pleaded no contest Nov. 6 to one felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated for the Dec. 16, 2010, crash in Alhambra that killed 21-year-old Maria Faith Soloman.
Garcia’s vehicle hydroplaned — it was raining at the time — and crashed into the back of a tractor in a freeway construction area, according to Deputy District Attorney Kevin Keeland.
Two other passengers were injured in the crash.
Authorities determined that Garcia had a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent, according to the prosecutor.
