A man who was found dead Wednesday in an unincorporated area south of the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area suffered major traumatic injuries to his head and body, but exactly what killed him was not immediately clear, authorities said.

The victim, who was not immediately identified, was found near the intersection of San Gabriel and Rosemead boulevards east of Montebello around 12:30 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Crystal Hernandez.

Hernandez said initial reports that the victim suffered stab wounds turned out to be “inconclusive” and further investigation was needed to establish the cause of death.

The sheriff’s department asked that anyone with information on the man’s death contact its Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
