A 26-year-old man drenched with gasoline walked into the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Santa Clarita Valley Station in Valencia Friday and tried to light himself on fire, but his lighter wouldn’t work.
The man, a resident of Piru in Ventura County, was holding a lighter when he entered the station at 23740 Magic Mountain Parkway and attempted to light himself ablaze several times, said sheriff’s Lt. William Moulder.
“A deputy working the counter attempted to prevent the man from lighting himself, but after realizing the lighter was not working (the man) exited the station lobby,” Moulder said. “He got into a pickup truck and drove away from the station.”
Deputies followed the vehicle, conducted a traffic stop and detained the man, who was rendered safe by firefighters who were called to the scene and washed off the gasoline, Moulder said.
The man was taken to a hospital for evaluation, Moulder said.
