A 69-year-old Monterey Park man whose family called police to say he suffered from mental illness and was potentially suicidal fatally shot himself Sunday after being pulled over by officers.

Police were contacted about 11 a.m., but received no word that the man was armed, Monterey Park police Sgt. Art Rousseau told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

Officers located the man driving about 11:45 a.m. and pulled him over in the 1800 block of West Garvey Avenue and after stopping along the side of the road the man shot himself once in the head with a handgun, Rousseau told The Tribune.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the sergeant said.

The man’s name has not been released.
