Police Wednesday released security video of a man being sought for robbing a Whittier gas station at gunpoint and pistol-whipping a clerk.

The crime occurred about 1:40 a.m. Tuesday in the 13700 block of Whittier Boulevard, said Whittier police Officer John Scoggins.

“The suspect entered the location wearing a surgical mask and carrying a handgun,” Scoggins said. “He jumped over the counter, demanding the victim open the cash register. When the victim couldn’t do it fast enough, the suspect hit him over the head with the gun. The victim was able to get the register opened, and when he did, the suspect grabbed the money from (it), and then ran northbound through the parking lot out of sight.”

The suspect was described as black, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, and weighing 130 pounds. In addition to the surgical mask, he was wearing gloves and a blue hoodie-style jacket.

Anyone with information on the crime was urged to call Detective Jose Bolanos, (562) 567-9281.
