A brief pursuit of a motorist in south Los Angeles ended in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday, injuring as many as eight people, including four children.
The chase began about 10:05 a.m. at 83rd Street and Vermont Avenue, where officers tried to pull over a motorist who was driving recklessly, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Liliana Preciado.
The three-vehicle crash occurred a few minutes later at Main Street and Imperial Highway, where the suspect was taken into custody, Preciado said. His name was not immediately released.
Paramedics transported seven patients for hospital treatment, including a month-old baby and at least one other child, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. Injuries ranged from minor to serious, according to the LAFD.
Two children, ages 2 and 3, were in the vehicle with the suspect, LAPD Officer Jack Richter said. Another vehicle was occupied by a woman and two children: a newborn and a 2-year-old, Richter said.
Before the vehicles crashed, the suspect’s vehicle hit a bicyclist, Richter said.
The people evaluated for possible injury included four children, the suspect, two motorists and the bicyclist, LAPD Capt. Marc Reina said.
“We have four children,” LAPD Capt. Marc Reina told KCAL9. “Two children that were with the suspect; two children that were with (their) mother in another vehicle that was involved in the traffic collision; the suspect; the mother of those two children in the other vehicle, … a bicyclist who was sideswiped east of our location here on Imperial Highway by the suspect and the driver of (a) white van.”
