A man was in custody Thursday on suspicion of stabbing another man and trying to stab “numerous” other people in Santa Clarita, authorities said.

Michael Barela, 54, was arrested at the scene of the crime, which occurred about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported. Barela was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and held in lieu of $1 million bail. He was scheduled to appear in court in San Fernando on Friday.

Deputies went to the 25800 block of Tournament Road in response to a report that a man “was attempting to stab numerous people with a knife,” a sheriff’s statement said.

Barela was detained, and deputies found a man who had been stabbed multiple times in the upper body, the sheriff’s department reported. The injured man was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. A knife believed used in the crime was recovered at the scene.
