A motorcyclist was fatally injured when he ran a red light in Long Beach and crashed into an SUV, authorities said Thursday.

The 33-year-old Temecula man was injured about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at Fourth Street and Redondo Avenue and died at a hospital, the Long Beach Police Department said. Authorities withheld his name, pending notification of kin.

The man had been riding a 2013 Kawasaki Ninja north on Redondo Avenue “approaching a yellow light at Fourth Street at a high rate of speed,” police said in a statement.

“Three northbound vehicles stopped in the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes for the signal that had just turned red,” police said. “The motorcyclist split traffic between the two lanes, entered the intersection on a red light, and struck … (a) Nissan Murano driven by a 45-year-old resident of Long Beach, (who) was initiating a left turn from southbound Redondo Avenue to eastbound Fourth Street …”

The driver of the Nissan was not injured.
