Police searched Friday for possibly armed suspects in Downey, causing two schools to be placed on lockdown for less than an hour.

The search got under way about 1 p.m. in the area of Brunache Street and Rives Avenue, said Downey police Sgt. Maria Viegas.

Stauffer Middle School and Old River Elementary schools, which are adjacent to one another in the 11900 block of Old River School Road, several blocks from where the search was going on, were placed on precautionary lockdown from 1:20 p.m. to about 2 p.m., said Dr. Robert Jagielski, director of student services with the Downey Unified School District.

There was never any direct threat to the school and students were released in normal fashion, he said.

The status of the suspect search was not immediately clear.
