A man who threatened to jump off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro on Sunday morning — prompting authorities to shut down the span — climbed down a ladder extended to him by firefighters, police said.

Officers responded to the scene about 6:30 a.m., a dispatcher at the Los Angeles Police Department‘s Harbor Station said.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert at 8:46 a.m. shutting down the eastbound 47 at Harbor Boulevard as well as the on ramp to the eastbound 47 until further notice.

The SigAlert later was updated to include the westbound 47 at Ferry Street.

The man came down about 9 a.m., police said.

“He did not jump,” the dispatcher said. “When they put the ladder up, he crawled down.”

The man was taken to a hospital to be examined, she said.
