A former volunteer who pleaded guilty to sex crimes involving a half-dozen children at a Christian school in El Monte was sentenced Monday to 30 years to life in prison.

Pomona Superior Court Judge Juan Carlos Dominquez also ordered Johnny Beserra, 21, of El Monte, to register as a sex offender for life.

Beserra pleaded guilty Jan. 20 to two counts of continuous sexual abuse and one count each of forcible oral copulation of a person under 14, committing a lewd act on a child, child molesting and possession of child pornography.

Beserra was a volunteer at El Monte Christian Academy. Prosecutors said the crimes occurred between August 2010 and May 2014 and involved six children who were between the ages of 7 and 17, with some occurring at the school.

Beserra was arrested May 24 and has remained in jail since then.
