An 86-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man, reportedly her son, were killed in a house fire in Altadena, Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said Sunday.

Two other people suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital from house, which was enveloped in flames at at 10:17 p.m. Saturday. A fifth person at the residence escaped injury, said Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Brian Jordan.

Firefighters were dispatched to the single-story structure at 2469 N. Hollisten Ave., and reported a 10:36 p.m. Saturday knockdown time, according to a Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatcher.

Jordan said a cause of the fire was under investigation. A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Arson/Explosive detail ruled the cause of the fire as accidental and was still under investigation.

“There were bars on the home and no working smoke detectors,” he said. “We know the 86-year-old woman smoked.

“They (firefighters) found oxygen bottles in the house. There was a medical condition going on there.”

The fire captain said he could not confirm some neighbors’ accounts, which said the dead people were a mother and her wheelchair-bound son.
