A single block of West Fourth Street in front of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Rampart station in the Westlake neighborhood was closed for two hours early while an abandoned backpack was examined.
The child’s red backpack was noticed by patrol officers near the station’s Fourth Street entrance around 2:30 a.m., Thursday, LAPD Sgt. Melvin Gamble said. The area had been cordoned off until the LAPD bomb squad could examine the backpack, Gamble said.
A children’s daycare center adjoins the Rampart station, and Gamble said he believes the backpack may have been inadvertently left Wednesday.
The backpack was found to contain clothing and the 1500 block of West Fourth was re-opened at 4:30 a.m.
