Police arrested an 18-year-old man who sped away from a drunken driving checkpoint in Whittier, but four accomplices disappeared inside a discount store, a police lieutenant said.

Jessy Robledo, of Whittier, was arrested for carrying a loaded firearm and delaying an officer, said Whittier Police Lt. Aaron Ruiz.

The chase started when Robledo refused to drive into a secondary checkpoint after stopping at a checkpoint near the intersection of Lambert Road and Scott Avenue, Ellis said.

During a short vehicle chase, a sawed-off shotgun was thrown from the fleeing vehicle. The vehicle stopped and five people inside bailed out and ran into a 99 Cent discount store in the 15300 block of Whittier Boulevard a little before 10 p.m. Friday, Whittier Police Department Lt. Bryan Ellis said.

There were no customers in the store, Ellis said, and the four accomplices got away, Ruiz said.

Robledo was booked into the Whittier Jail at 12:25 a.m., where he was being held in lieu of $35,000 bail, according to the sheriff’s Information Center.
