The Coroner’s Office on Sunday publicly identified the 31-year-old man who was struck and killed in the northbound lanes of the Harbor (110) Freeway in Carson on Friday.

The man was identified as Baltazar Alvarez, a resident of Wilmington, said Coroner’s Lt. Fred Corral.

Alvarez was struck near the junction with theSan Diego (405) Freeway, at 11:34 p.m. Friday and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a California Highway Patrol news statement.

The motorist, a 55-year-old woman driving a 2013 gray Mazda 3, was going northbound, just north of Del Amo Boulevard at about 65 miles per hour when she struck Alvarez. He had been running across the freeway from the center median, towards her vehicle, according to the news statement.

The motorist applied her brakes, but was unable to to stop in time. Paramedics arriving at the scene pronounced him dead at 11:51 p.m. Friday, according to the statement.

There was no explanation from the CHP about why he was on the freeway.
