A man was killed Wednesday when he fell out of a tree and impaled himself on a spiked metal fence in the East Hollywood area after a night of heavy drinking, police said.
Rescue crews were called to the 500 block of North Berendo Street around 3:40 a.m., said Los Angeles police Sgt. Melvin Gamble.
Edwin Ochoa, 30, of Los Angeles died at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.
A police captain told reporters at the scene that Ochoa apparently climbed the tree to retrieve a coat.
Gamble said a broken branch and 20 empty beer cans were found around the tree, and local residents told police officers that Ochoa was known as a heavy drinker.
Ochoa did not appear to have been engaged in any illegal activity, Gamble said.
