A 25-year-old man suffered second and third-degree burns to his hands as he escaped a fire inside his duplex apartment Friday morning in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles, authorities said.
The blaze inside one of the duplex units in the 1600 block of Micheltorena Street was reported at 5:11 a.m., fire department spokesman Erik Scott said.
The blaze did extensive damage to the south unit, but the two residents in the north unit at 1626 Micheltorena St. were not displaced, Scott said.
The injured man was hospitalized in serious but stable condition, Scott said.
The department dispatched 47 firefighters to the scene and knocked down the fire in about 45 minutes, according to Scott.
No injuries involving the firefighters were reported, he said.
The injured resident was alerted to the fire by working smoke alarms inside the duplex, Scott said, adding working smoke alarms can make the difference between life and death.
