A 22-year-old San Francisco man was killed early Monday on the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway, west of the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in the Irwindale area, after he got out of his car after a solo crash and was struck by a big rig, authorities said.
The crash was initially reported at 1:27 a.m. as a hit-and-run, but California Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Dulong said that turned out not to be the case.
Dulong said the investigation revealed that the driver of a 2015 Toyota Prius veered to the right for unknown reasons and hit a concrete sound wall. He was walking around the disabled Prius when the driver of a big rig swerved to avoid him. But the rear of the rig’s trailer struck the Prius and its driver, who was thrown into the number two lane, the sergeant said.
The truck’s driver, 48-year-old Bradley Gunderman of Tulare, was uninjured.
The fatally injured motorist’s name was withheld pending notification of his family. The CHP is looking for witnesses to aid in the investigation. Anyone with information was asked to call Officer J. Edmunds of the Baldwin Park office at (626) 338-1164.
