Authorities on Friday identified a man who was fatally shot by Los Angeles police a short time after he allegedly shot and killed another man.
The officer-involved shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday near Third and Matthews streets.
Roberto Rodriguez, 39, died of Monterey Park died at the scene, said coroner’s Chief Craig Harvey.
Rodriguez was a suspect in the shooting death a few minutes earlier of a 29-year-old man near Fourth and Soto streets, said LAPD Officer Nuria Vanegas.
Officers were patrolling in the area when they heard gunshots and saw a wounded man collapse, Vanegas said. “The suspect was running in the area and they went after him,” she said.
A gun was recovered at the scene of the fatal officer-involved shooting. The circumstances of both shootings remained under investigation.
The name of the victim of the first shooting was being withheld pending family notification, according to the coroner’s office.
