The dismembered remains of a days-old infant were found Sunday morning in the unincorporated Westmont area, the sheriff’s department reported.

The remains were found about 11:05 a.m. in the 1500 block of West 104th Street, by homeowner who called authorities, Deputy Ryan Rouzan of the Los Angeles County Sheriff‘s Information Bureau said.

Homicide detectives and coroner’s investigators were dispatched to the scene and confirmed the remains were human and were those of a 1- to 3-day old infant, Rouzan said.

“The infant appears to have been dismembered,” he said. “Significant portions of the body are still missing.”

The remains were found in a backyard, according to one news report.

Detectives asked that area residents look in their yards and trash cans for suspicious discarded items. They would also like to speak with any females who were recently pregnant, but no longer are, with no baby present, Rouzan said.

Anyone with information that could help in the investigation was urged to call Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives Adan Torres or Francis X. Hardiman at (323) 890-5500. Anonymous tips can be provided by calling Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
