A jewelry store security guard fired shots after scuffling with a man suspected of snatching a watch from a Rowland Heights store, though it’s unknown whether he was injured as he escaped in a getaway car, police said Sunday.

At about 3:15 p.m., an unidentified black man walked into Hing Wa Lee Jewelers at 1569 Fairway Drive and asked to see a watch before fleeing the store with it, according to Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Lt. David Buckner.

It’s believed the suspect swiped a Rolex watch worth $25,000, Buckner said.

A security guard gave chase and momentarily caught the suspect, who broke free and looked like he was going to open fire, he said.

The guard opened fire several times, but it’s unclear if the suspect was struck, he said.

The suspect then got into the passenger side of a silver vehicle and was driven away by an unidentified driver, Buckner said.

It’s unclear what kind of watch was stolen, but it was likely a “high-dollar” one, Buckner said.

The suspect was described as being about 6 feet tall and weighing about 240 pounds.
