A 22-year-old driver was killed when his lost control of his vehicle and it became wedged beneath a freeway ramp in Boyle Heights early Saturday.

The crash was at 3:05 a.m. on the curving two-lane transition ramp from the north Golden State (5) Freeway to the east San Bernardino (10) Freeway, according to California Highway Patrol reports.

The man was driving a 2009 Jeep Cherokee on the transition road at an unknown speed, when he allowed the vehicle to veer off the roadway and up an embankment, where it struck the State Street onramp to the Golden State (5) Freeway overcrossing, according to the CHP.

The Jeep was pinned against the overpass’s column and the 22-year-old motorist, the lone person in the vehicle, was pronounced dead the scene, according to the CHP report.

His name was withheld at first, pending notification of his family, said Lt. Dave Smith of the Coroner’s Office.
