A parolee who allegedly held a knife to a 50-year-old woman’s throat during a carjacking outside a Westminster supermarket has been arrested by detectives who found the woman’s car in the suspect’s driveway.

Jason Charles Petrilla, 41, of Westminster was arrested on Thursday, said Westminster Police Sgt. Eddie Esqueda.

Detectives found him hiding inside his home, Esqueda said.

The carjacking occurred on May 20 outside the Saigon City Supermarket at the intersection of Brookhurst Street and McFadden Avenue, Esqueda said.

“The next day, the suspect went back to the Saigon City Supermarket and tried to return and receive a refund for medication he had located in the female victim’s car,” Esqueda said.

Pharmacy staff recognized him as the carjacker and alerted a Westminster police officer who happened to be patrolling in the parking lot, Esqueda said.

Petrilla managed to escape, but officers obtained his image from the pharmacy’s surveillance cameras and it was disseminated as an information bulletin, Esqueda said.

“One of our special investigation detectives saw the bulletin and positively identified the suspect, ” he said.

In addition to being wanted in connection with the carjacking, Petrilla had felony warrants for his arrest. He was booked on suspicion of carjacking, burglary and a parole violation, Esqueda said.
