A domestic violence suspect was dead Sunday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after barricading himself in a La Puente home has been identified, authorities said.
The lifeless body of Chien Yu, 61, was discovered about 12:30 p.m. with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies, Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez said.
Yu’s wife met deputies at a separate location about 12 hours earlier and said she was assaulted by her husband, who she said was armed with a rifle and threatened to kill her and himself, Navarro-Suarez said.
Deputies went to the couple’s home in the 900 block of Willow Avenue and saw the man, armed with a long gun and pacing in the garage area of the residence, Navarro-Suarez said.
They contained the scene, evacuated some neighbors and called in a Special Enforcement Bureau Special Weapons Team and a Crisis Negotiation Team, she said.
Commands to surrender were given in English and Mandarin, but the man would not comply and barricaded himself inside the home, Navarro-Suarez said.
Negotiators tried throughout the standoff to make contact with the suspect, but there was no response, she said.
At some point, the Special Weapons Team sent tear gas into the home and utilized an unspecified distraction device to get the man to comply, to no avail, Navarro-Suarez said.
Deputies entered the home about 12:30 p.m. and found Yu’s body, she said.
Yu’s wife was treated for minor injuries she sustained during the assault, Navarro-Suarez said.
