Sheriff’s divers recovered the body of a man about 100 feet down on the ocean floor off San Clemente Island on Monday.

A recreational diver came across the body Sunday about 4 p.m., but the initial attempt to recover the body by sheriff’s divers and the Coast Guard that evening were suspended because of a lack of visibility, said Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

The cause of death will be determined by the coroner’s office, who came and took possession of the body.

Whenever the death or disappearance of a person occurs as the result of a boating accident and/or incident on the waters within Los Angeles County, sheriff’s department Homicide Bureau responds and investigates, Navarro-Suarez said.

Anyone with information was asked to call homicide investigators at (323) 890-5500.
